Every one wanted a garden of their own, big or small, full of flowers.
Of all the multitudes of vegetation planted, roses, were by far,
the favorite and the garden at the Hôtel Baudy followed this trend.
Its proximity to Monet’s Garden and the arrival of a nursery
in Giverny aided in its creation.
Ignoring the rigid lessons of the horticulturist,
the garden was elaborated with no other concern but pleasure.
The balance and harmonis of the various perspectives was left to Nature.
Rustic and invincible perennials installed themselves among the roses,
while vines began snaking their way up the tree trunks and walls.

Today the entire garden has retained this enchanting abandon
where winding paths-guarded by daisies and hypericum
and ston steps lead one to the summit of the hill.
The countless varieties of ancient rose bushes,
sometimes bent under the weight of their petals,
bring to mind the haunting image of ladies in crinolines
standing here a century ago, as you are today,
basking in the splendor of the blossoms. |
