- 1884-1886 Studies under William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in New York

- 1887 Travels to Paris and attends several Académies. He is also a pupil of Carolus-Duran.

- 1888 Accompanies Theodore Wendel to Giverny and stays at the Hôtel Baudy. Settles in the village and befriends Claude Monet.

- 1892 Marries Suzanne Hoschedé, Monet’s stepdaughter.

- 1893-1894 Birth of their chidren James and Alice.

- 1897 First solo exhibition at Galerie Vollard, Paris. Regularly exhibits in Paris.

- 1899 Death of Suzanne.

- 1900 Marries Marthe, Suzanne’s sister.

- 1913 The Butlers move to New York, where the artist had received commissions for decorative panels. Several solo exhibitions, participates in the Armory Showl.

- 1918-1921 Founder Member of the Society of Independant Artists.

- 1921 Returns to Giverny.
