- 1876-1877 Attends the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati

- 1878-1880 Attends the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he becomes friends with the artist Frank Duveneck. Travels in Europe, notably in Polling in Bavaria, to Florence and Venice.

- 1886-1887 Attends the Academy Julian in Paris. Stays in Giverny in 1886, 1887 and 1888.

- 1888 Returns to the United States.

- 1889 Exhibits impressionist landscapes in Boston.

- 1892-1897 Lives in Boston. Teaches at Cowles Art School and Wellesley College.

- 1898 Moves to a farm at Ipswich (Massachusetts) and paints landscapes. Exhibits regulary in Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
