Ten artists expose in the new Letoliacha Gallery
at 69 rue Claude-Monet.
Every day except Mondays.
Opened 11:00 until 18:00

This exhibition is proposed by Andre and Veronique Faveri within an astonishing framework: the presence of paintings in this arched cellar completely transform this place which becomes magic then. “We wanted to make a place full with emotions of it with painters with the different artistic cultures because pastels, watercolours are found here, acrylic resins and oil-base paints”. New tenants of the site deserve alone a visit so much the enthusiasm which they release is a puff of fresh air. Rare are the artists to present works of other painters who manage to speak about it with as much enthusiasm.

Death of Madame Florence Van der Kemp.

Florence van der Kemp. Florence (Flo-RAHNZ) and her late husband Gerald van der Kemp were for many years the force behind the private fund-raising and restoration at Versailles, where Mr. van der Kemp served as the chief curator, and where they lived (and brought up their family) in the apartments that were originally built for Colbert, the minister of finance for Louis XIV.

The van der Kemps fundraising efforts brought out the best of many an American millionaire and billionaire and made a big difference in putting France’s greatest cultural symbol in the excellent condition we enjoy today. In fact, the van der Kemps were so successful that when they retired, the took on the restoration of Monet’s gardens at Giverny. Florence, who is another one of those working girls, now over 90, continues the work she and her husband started, as she gently reminded her guests today, imploring them to keep in touch when planning a visit to Paris or Giverny.

CLAUDE MONET.

Plum trees are in flowers, this day of April, 1883. Claude Monet is under the way since the 6th. The day before, he announced to Durand-Ruel that he took the train for Vernon with plan to explore the region to find a home there. Undoubtedly, the following day or two days later that by taking back up the bank on foot the Right Bank of Seine it discovers the place finally where its life settles. Giverny, three hundred inhabitants: a village of cultivants, sat on a very ancient Gallo-Roman and Merovingian site. In the Middle Ages, several monasteries, a leper hospital next to the road "from below " this way of Roy which saint Louis borrowed to visit his mother in a monastery of vicinity. Claude Monet knows about it nothing and does not care about it. But since for Argenteuil or Vétheuil, it did not make a mistake: the instinct of the landscapist obeys the most ancient criteria which chaired to be chosen by a place crossroad of valleys, curve of a river, protective fold. Topographical perfection, biographical coincidence. Claude Monet is exactly in the middle of his life. It has not only in front of him this big rhythmic landscape of poplars, this orchard in flowers promised in a wonderful destiny, this skyline of bluish hills, the landscape at which he looks carries 43 years of aesthetic experiments in germ.

Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926. He and many members of his family are interred in the village cemetery.

AMERICAN MUSEUM.

Daniel J. Terra (1911 / 1996), Businessman and Patron of the Arts Grandson of an Italian lithographer who had immigrated to the United States, Daniel J. Terra was brought up in Pennsylvania. While studying chemical engineering at Pennsylvania State University, he worked as an apprentice in the family workshop and took out a patent for a chemical component which reduced the ink drying process from ninety six hours to twenty four. This invention revolutionized printing techniques and contributed to the success of Life magazine. In 1940, Daniel Terra and his friend John Lawson founded Lawter Chemicals which developed into a multinational company with offices in twelve countries.

Starting in 1937, Daniel Terra began to collect art, initially eighteenth and nineteenth century British landscapes, and later exclusively American art from the Colonial period to World War II. Appointed United States Ambassador at Large for Cultural Affairs in 1983, he travelled to France and discovered with enthusiasm Giverny’s rich artistic past. This encounter had an influence on the development of his collection, and he began actively to acquire works painted in the Norman village. Daniel Terra longed to bring these American masterworks back to the village where they were painted. He realized his dream with the inauguration of the Musée d'Art Américain Giverny on June 2, 1992. Each year a large and diverse public discovers the works of the Giverny painters and also learns about American art history from 1750 to the present through the musée’s ambitious exhibitions and programs.

A COLONY OF ARTISTS, 1885-1915.

Lured by the ineffable beauty represented in Claude Monet's art and the promise of painting en plein air, artists from America and across Europe flocked to the French village of Giverny in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, transforming it from a sleepy hamlet to a colorful and thriving artists' community. Impressionist Giverny: A Colony of artists, 1885-1915 captures the creative spirit and aesthetic that enlivened this artistic haven a century ago. It evokes the longevity of impressionism and highlights the role Giverny played in the movement's international transformations, placing the Normanvillage in the context of other European artist colonies of its era.
(Compiled by Katherine M. Bourguignon and Vanessa Lecomte).

More than 350 artists from eighteen different countries worked in Giverny between 1885 and 1915. Such an international mix added to the artistic and social life of the village. Individuals from around the world made important contributions to the artists' colony and, after returning to their home countries, helped diffuse the impressionist aesthetic. Americans account for the majority of artists in Giverny during this thirty-year period and large numbers of artists from England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and Australia created a predominantly Anglo-Saxon environment.
The international presence in the village, however, cannot be neglected with artists also from Argentina, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Their visits to the village are worth noting; for example: a Spanish artist was the second person to register at the H6tel Baudy in 1887 (Vilallonga); an Argentinean stayed for several months in 1888 and again in 1889 (Schiaffino); two Russian women visited in 1894 (Klein and William); several Canadian women arrived in 18gi (Galbrith, Gardner, Lewis, and Oliver); a handful of Norwegian artists came to the village in the 18gos and igoos (Gronvold, Horneman, Laache, Steineger, and Stenersen); a Polish artist stayed at the Maison Rose in 1912 (Pankiewicz). A few of these foreigners remained in Giverny for extended periods and, like Czech artist Vdclav Radimsky, became friends with their American counterparts and contributed to the development of the colony.
Most of the artists on the list were students, aged between 25 and 35, and often attending the Academie Julian in Paris. Many individuals who identified themselves as artists on the Hôtel Baudy register are unknown today; mystery still clouds even the most basic information about them. Other artists have been identified but little is known about their careers or their Giverny sojourns. In turn, paintings produced in Giverny by numerous artists have not yet come to light. Non-artist visitors such as poets American Richard Hovey or Norwegian Erik Lie; musicians Edward Breck or Courtland Palmer; art dealers; and tourists played an important role in the development of the artists' colony, but they do not figure on this list. In turn, artists who worked in Giverny and Vernon after 1915 such as the American Joseph Kleitsch and the Frenchman Isidore Lévy have not been included. Finally, artists who visited Monet but did not interact with the colony do not appear on this list. Berthe Morisot came in 1885 and 1890; Edgar Degas in 1910; Vuillard and Matisse in 1917; Maurice Denis in 1924; and so many others. To avoid confusion, their stories are kept separate from this one.

Almost all information about artists visiting Giverny prior to 1899 comes from the Hôtel Baudy register, conserved at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The register contains numerous illegible names, incomplete information, and inconsistent numbers. Carol Lowrey painstakingly transcribed it in William H. Gerdts, Monet's Giverny An Impressionist Colony (1993), and we depended on her careful notations and often confirmed her suppositions. Subsequent registers from the Hôtel Baudy and registers from other inns and hotels in Giverny have not been located. Artists who did not register at a hotel but stayed with friends or rented a house are more difficult to trace. Therefore, information about many artists who visited before 1899 and all artists after 1899 have come from a variety of sources, such as historic newspaper articles, census listings, artists' correspondence and diaries, signed works of art and recently published books and catalogues. One of the most important sources about artists in Giverny is Gerdts, Monet's Giverny (1993), and we have relied on his excellent research and detailed footnotes. Although the list takes into account all available resources in France and the United States, it remains incomplete. In publishing it, we want to demonstrate certain generalities about the colony and its evolution as well as give names and nationalities to the hundreds of individual artists who visited over the years. We hope that it will spark further research and bring forth information about additional arfim who stayed in Giverny during this period. We thank the numerous people who worked directly and indirectly on this list over the past four years for tireless research efforts and creative solutions to problems. We also thank scholars, gallery owners, private collectors, and artists' families who provided answers and details. Finally, we apologize to the artists whose names we have inadvertently excluded from this list.

The list includes name, nationality and life dates of artists as well as year(s) of presence in Giverny. In a few cases when nothing is known about an artist, places of birth listed on the Hôtel Baudy register are provided. The Hôtel Baudy register (1887-99) contains 13 columns across double-pages to be completed by travelers (including Name; Age; Profession; Place of Birth; Address; etc.) but several columns were almost always left blank. in turn, names and dates are often difficult to decipher, and ages are not always accurate. Arrival and departure dates from the register may not reflect the entire length of an artist's presence in Giverny since many artists found other accommodations after a brief visit to the hotel.
